My Puppy Turned Senior
I’m thinking back on what seems like only yesterday. After much weighing, consideration, consulting with extended family members and analyzing if we were ready for a new member to our family, we adopted our first Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Not just any Corgi. A Corgi that has set high standards. He’s not a show dog, doesn’t have ribbons and trophies or published in any books about Corgis, but to me he exemplifies not only the beauty of the breed, but of a canine, as well.
After his near-death brawl earlier this year, he has seemingly recovered. However, is it age or residuals from the brawl that is slowing him down? The tragic reality and cruelty of nature is that a dog doesn’t inherit the lifespan that we have. To add insult to injury, a Corgi’s mortality is rather shorter in comparison to other breeds.
How to prepare myself for the inevitable of having to one day let go and say goodbye? For all the patience, unconditional love and putting up with me through my best and worst, will I find the strength and courage to in turn be as selfless as he’s been for me? I would like to think I can.
